Dear Friends,

I want to thank you for the support you have given me and my students over the past two years. With September approaching, I need your help again.

Here's a description of my class and our specific needs:

School: South Bronx Preparatory
Grade: 6th Grade
Subject: English

Number of students your donation will impact: 100

The students of Room 217 are like kids anywhere: bright, funny, and curious. What makes them special is their resilience. Living in one of the poorest communities in America, my students face obstacles like homelessness, domestic violence, and health problems. When they come to school, they are hoping to find a peaceful respite where they can learn. Unfortunately, our school lacks even the most basic supplies, such as appropriate reading materials, paper, and a functioning copy machine for teachers. With no school library, I must also create a classroom reading center filled with books that I acquire on my own.

My students are aware that they go to a "ghetto" school. At eleven years old, they realize that their classrooms are inferior to what they see on TV. I want to show them that society is not neglecting them. I envision Room 217 as a progressive environment, where students read independently, discuss literature, and collaborate on self-selected writing projects. To demonstrate my belief in their potential, I need Room 217 to shine with abundant resources and opportunities.

As a New York City public school teacher, I am eligible to be reimbursed for $110 for the purchase of classroom supplies. That means I have about $1 per student for the entire school year. I’m personally committed to making a difference in my classroom, but I can’t do it alone. If I can get 50 people to donate just $10, we can quintuple the funds allocated to each student. Even raising $100 will allow me to get a writing notebook for each child. Your support will make a world of difference to the students of Room 217.

Your donation will help me provide:

Computer paper

Pens and pencils

Art supplies

Books

Writing Portfolios for each child

Curriculum materials

Post-its, scissors, glue, staplers

Tables (the school has desks but no tables)

Benches for meeting area

Whiteboard markers and spray

Composition notebooks
